Jack Ma, multi billionaire, gave a talk recently about competing with robots and how we need to educate our children ‘to compete’... Guess I should listen to the whole thing, but I never let that stop me from expressing my opinion. This comment appeared on a friend’s share of the video: “I don't think teaching kids is good at all. Why should we impose our beliefs and ideas on another? Why don't we ALLOW kids to study what interests them, what fascinates them, what makes their heart sing? Isn't that what we all strive to do when we are grown up and abandon 'education' ..we do what our heart calls us to do. We would have a much better society if we did that from the beginning wouldn't we?” Darwin would be proud... You only abandoned education after you learned to read and write. Children need guidance. They also have no idea of the requirements of the future, like adding and subtracting, geography, drawing, sports, interacting with other people... I am the last person to suggest our education system is ideal, but there are a lot of things children need to be taught, that they would not voluntarily learn. If we do not teach our sons and daughters our values, what values will they be taught? Here’s a clue. Look at young Disney stars when they are 10 and when they are twenty. I guarantee the majority of parents don’t want their children to turn into that. http://tz2d.me/?c=RX

Paton's Pondering: A FB friend wrote a long post and in it he started talking about responsibility. "In Life we can... 1. Displace responsibility -----> Onto others. 2. Embrace responsibility ------> Into ourselves. Embracing responsibility is empowering. Displacing responsibility is disempowering." Now there is a part of me that seems to go: "That's not right..." no matter what you say. Growing up I was taught Debating, which was taking one side and arguing for it regardless of whether or not you agreed. I think more and more that 'Responsibility" is one of those words that 'sage folk' use to explain why shit doesn't work out. Like, if only you had been responsible in your marriage, it would have worked out... Or, you got divorced and you need to take responsibility for your part in it. Maybe you do. And maybe until you do, you will be a broken, depressed shell of a man... Or maybe you don't. Maybe that other person (to broaden the scope a bit) was a 100% responsible and you were in fact the victim. "Victim" is another one of those words that people seem to think lasts forever. You were a victim of a Hit and Run and you will be forever traumatized. You know, maybe, that person on the other side is insane, a psychopath or a criminal. And maybe you were walking down the wrong street at three in the afternoon. Discernment comes from knowing when you are responsible and shurking it, and when you are not and not being guilted by the "Where is your responsibility in this situation"... crowd. Maybe your responsibility is being more aware now when approached by a pretty psychopath, so you know to turn and run the other way. Forty years ago, I dated with woman. My friend kept in touch with her over the years. Our split up was brutal. She did everything she could to get me back. She got married decades ago, had a child and I hoped she found happiness. No contact for 37 years. Out of the blue, she sent a Friend request. I blocked her. I mentioned it to our mutual friend. She had asked him to contact me. He said do it yourself. I can not imagine anything worse (well, I can, but...) than reconnecting with her. I believe we should be considering "Acceptance" more the "Responsibility". The past is the past. Can't do anything. Forgive as much as you can and accept that is the way it was. If it was unpleasant then you make sure you don't get into that situation again. Put responsibility onto the responsible person. That's what I think anyway....

There are so many amazing places in the world. I alternate between the famous cities and unknown quiet smaller towns and villages, they all have something exceptional to offer. This is the Roman Arena in El Gem, Tunisia.

Scott's Soliloquy Is your glass half full? Or half empty? It is neither. The glass is completely full. There is no space for a single drop. While many areas of the world experience massive poverty, hunger, drought, etc., pretty much everyone in North America and Europe is living in incredible abundance. And it's a golden age for movie goers, TV viewers, sports fans. You can watch any sport 24/7 almost. I remember when Hockey Night In Canada had one hockey game, and it was the only hockey game you could watch all week. Now there are hockey games all week long. You can't watch them all. It is impossible. There are more books than you could read in a lifetime published every month. YouTube has billions of hours of video uploaded every day. There are websites discussing every topic under the sun. And of course, reading posts on Facebook or Twitter is a full time job... We are used to be in lack. To be hungry for more. It is in our genes. Now we need to change. When I look at my life, I see aspects that I want to change. I suspect we all do. That is part of the human condition. But we are seduced by the marketing messages, the cultural pressures, our friends' opinions... In many cases, we are brainwashed at an early age. As young children we have no filters, no discernment. Our parents tell us what is 'good, 'bad', 'proper' or 'improper', and as we grow up, we never, or rarely, think to challenge those beliefs. Today, however, if we do want to make a change, we are faced with a challenge unique in human history... To gain, we first have to lose. We have so much, but no time. And change requires time. We have to give up some activity, some habitual activity, if we want to add behaviors or activities we now want to experience. And the "You can have it all" mentality comes full force up against our heart's desires. We are trained to horde, not to minimize. There is always a generational backlash against the previous generation(s). And Millenials, I hear, are thinking they want more (or less) of a life, and less of a constant race on the hamster wheel called a career. Do you think about what you want in Life? Do you think about what you have to give up in order to get it? Do you think about how you can achieve that goal? How you can set yourself up for success? Do you have the patience to wait for the right 'season' to plant the seeds of your new adventure, activity, whatever the desire is? Because while 'all we have is Now', Now is not always the best time to start... I have run up against this. I am starting to desire new goals, new activities, and to my shock I am looking at how I spend my time and realizing that to accomplish those new goals, I have to give up some 'guilty pleasures'. This starts a Tug-of-War between the comfortable habits and the new desires. Is your glass half full? Or half empty?

Scott’s Soliloquy The moon has phases. Life has phases. The year has seasons. We have seasons. The day has active times and inactive times... awake and asleep. I think life is more challenging/frustrating when we are unaware of our rhythms. Imagine a flower blooming in minus thirty degree weather in Canada in winter. Crazy, but that’s what we try to do all the time. Or maybe it’s just me...
